A NEW SELECTION OF 55-WORD STORIES

It’s a long time since I’ve written any 55-word stories so I thought I’d toss in a few to keep my hand in. It’s a useful little exercise for any budding writer to cut down on all those adjectives and adverbs. They’ve all got a sort of Biblical theme. Hope you enjoy them.

55word

       WAS IT WORTH IT?

By Brad Fleming

“So, you’ve come for your money, have you?”

The speaker was calm, arrogant, plainly in control of the encounter.

The wretched creature in front of him shuffled his feet nervously as the other tossed a handful of coins towards him.

“Well, you’ve earned your thirty silver coins Judas. I’d advise you to spend it quickly.”

THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL

By Brad Fleming

The men crouched on the dusty earth in a rough circle. It had been a long day and all they wanted was to return to their barracks.

Their leader flicked the dice onto the ground. Glancing up at the figure nailed to the cross. “I’ll have his robe. It’s all he had of any value.”

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY

 By Brad Fleming

“Where did you spring from?” they asked the man walking up the beach.

“You wouldn’t believe me if I
told you,” the stranger said.

“Come on, tell us. You look all in—and you’re soaking wet.”

“You wouldn’t look so hot yourselves if you’d spent three days in the belly of a fish,” said Jonah”

THE BIG BLOW

By Brad Fleming

You guys any good?” the pub manager wanted to know. “Can’t say I’ve ever heard of you. What did you say your name was?”

“I’m Josh and our band are known as The Trumpeters.”

“Do you put on a good show?”

“We sure do. Last week over in Jericho we brought the whole place down!”

THE BITER BIT

 By Brad Fleming

“You were right,” he said. “It tastes delicious.”

! told you it would,” she smiled. “Bet you’re glad you ate it now?”

“Best apple I’ve ever tasted,” he answered.

“And you were frightened to try it,” she jeered.

“Shhh! Look out, somebody’s coming.”

“Adam, Eve, what have you two been up to today?” God said.

The pair faced each other across the court. They felt tense and nervous. The court officials took their place. The crowd was excited and expectant. Press photographers and the nation’s media were set up awaiting the outcome of the trial. Finally he slowly took the steps to his seat. “Quiet please. Mr Murray to serve.”
